Jesh Humphrey joined UNC Charlotte in 2006 and was appointed Vice Chancellor and General Counsel in 2016. As Vice Chancellor and General Counsel, Humphrey supervises the attorneys and staff in the Office of Legal Affairs, including the Director of University Compliance and the University Public Records Officer. The Office of Legal Affairs is dedicated to minimizing legal risk to UNC Charlotte and resolving its legal issues while finding creative and ethical ways to help faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees accomplish tasks that advance the University's mission and interests.
Humphrey previously served as Chief Legal Officer for the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and as Assistant Vice President for Legal Affairs for the University of North Carolina. Before moving in-house with the UNC system, Humphrey served as outside counsel to corporate and education clients in private practice with Helms, Mulliss & Wicker, PLLC (now McGuire Woods LLP). He received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law.
Humphrey met and married his wife, Michelle, while they both attended law school. Michelle worked in child advocacy as a staff attorney for the Council for Children's Rights before transitioning to staying at home full-time with their two sons. Both boys are students at a local public charter school, where Humphrey serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Humphrey also has an active leadership role in the North Carolina Bar Association Education Law Section and an appointment as an associate member of UNC Charlotte's Graduate Faculty.
